Denim and Diamonds!

Good Morning Atlanta and Congratulations to the latest addition to the MBGA family, Ms. Tia Ascar! Tia and the other lovely contestants of the Denim and Diamonds themed Ms. Black Georgia-USA 2012 pageant, gave fierce performances as they competed for the crown and esteemed title. Tia’s military discipline and poise, fiery tahitian dance talent, and eloquent interview earned her top scores!

The night was filled with stellar performances from the contestants and appearances by your favorite Georgia Beauty Queens including a vocal performance of Etta James’ “At Last” by the beautiful Erica-Christina Little, Miss Black Georgia-USA 2011; a dramatic theatrical monologue by Miss Black Georgia Teen 2011 Kayla Dean, and a performance of “O Mio Babbino Caro” from the Opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, by Yours Truly! What a great night!

I am truly looking forward to the next pageant this summer, where I will pass along the title of Miss Black Atlanta-USA to someone amazing! Will it be you? Feel free to leave a comment below or contact me at Atlanta@missblackga.org to learn more about how you can wear the crown and represent the beautiful city of Atlanta!

All that Glitters is…Luxe!

In honor of the upcoming celebration of Cinco De Mayo(Because
independence from oppression always deserves celebration!) I say Hola
Senors Y Senoritas of Atlanta!

What a whirlwind month! As promised, I have so much to share with
you about my volunteer activities and appearances last month.

First, let me say how honored I am to have been invited to attend
the Luxe Fashion Presentation held at Sanctuary Lounge downtown! J.
Loren tapped into creative genius with a small collection of curve
skimming, vibrantly colored, semi-sheer dresses and jumpsuits. I fell
absolutely in love with a royal blue number and a fully sequined
dress that induced slight palpitations of the heart! The models did a
superb job of being “FIERCE” with minimal motion! There
was also a delicious jewelry collection and yummy cupcakes on display
around the lounge for attendees to drool over! *sidebar-If you have
never been to Sanctuary Lounge, let me encourage you to plan a girl’s
night and check it out! It’s really a nice little spot, great decor,
sultry ambiance, and an awesome staff!

Many of you may have scooted over to your favorite neighborhood
record store on April 16th in honor of Record Store Day! If you were
in Forest Park then you probably ran into Erica or I as we hung out
in support of our local record stores DBS Sounds I and II. Tobago
Benito, owner of both BDS I and II, hosted a stellar event with
performances by Gospel superstar Vandarray, R&B great Sean
Garrett and new artists-a group of talented young men called
“Untitled” and the super talented, high-energy girls of
“Bliss”! Although all of the performances were amazing, my
eyes on Bliss, not only are they gorgeous, sweet, and talented, but
they made a cramped space feel like center stage at the Georgia Dome!
I was so proud and look forward to their breakout success in the US
very soon!

Overall, however, I must say that my favorite event this month was
volunteering at The Villages at Carver YMCA’s 4th Annual Healthy Kids
Day! What a fun event! Hundreds of families took the opportunity to
learn about health, safety, fitness, and nutrition by participating
in the day’s events.  Vendors ranged from a dental hygiene booth,
blood pressure check with Grady Hospital nurses, to the Atlanta
Police Department and everything in between! Many parents and
community members took part in the Dodge Test Drive Challenge which
provided a $20 donation to the Carver YMCA for each test drive!(I had
to take the opportunity to jump into one of those shiny new cars…it
was for a good cause!) I also really enjoyed the healthy snack(see
pic below)-delicious mango sorbet with fresh cut fruit! I could eat
it everyday…really, I could, it’s good for you!

I had a fun-filled month! And the Cherry on top? I got accepted
into the Master of Biomedical Science program at the Georgia Campus
of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine! Who says beauty
queens can’t be smart?

Love Your Flaws, They make You an Original and Irreplaceable!

Royally Yours,

Nykia

April is almost Gone…But where did March Go?

Happy Tuesday Atlanta!

I hope you all had a Blessed Easter and found time to Focus this Lenten
season! It has been an amazing 40+ days for me and I am more inspired
than ever before. I look forward to all of the wonderful
opportunities in my future. Which reminds me, it’s been a while since
my last post and I owe you an update!

I’m sure you’re all familiar with our beautiful First Lady’s “Let’s
Move” initiative to combat childhood obesity. Schools around the
state are implementing Safe Routes to School Programs to encourage
more kids to walk and bike to/from school where it is safe, and to
make it safe where it currently is not. This is such a fun and easy
way to increase physical activity! In Georgia, March is the official
month to celebrate walking and biking to school. Schools hosted
walk-to-school day events, walking and rolling school buses, on
campus walking parades, and even walk-home-from school events in an
effort to kickoff the start of warm weather and prime season for
jump-starting physical activity! I had the unique opportunity to
participate in a variety of events all over the South half of the
state, from Columbus to Valdosta, and seemingly everything in
between! It was an amazing experience, seeing kids as young as 5
walking or biking to school with their friends and family in
celebration of getting healthy and having fun!

Also in March, Aniz,Inc and Red Pump Project-Atlanta hosted an HIV/AIDS
Awareness event at Wine Styles on Cascade, in honor of National Women
and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The room was filled to the brim
with beautiful women strutting their stuff in gorgeous red shoes of
every style and flavor. The gentlemen were out in support  en
force
too, rocking red ties and other accessories! I had the
pleasure of meeting former Ms. Black GA-USA Gabbie McGee at the
event. You may be familiar with this velvety crooner as she is an
accomplished jazz vocalist from right here in Atlanta! It was great
getting to know her and catching up on her activities since her
reign, which include multiple album releases! I truly look forward to
working closely with both Red Pump Project and Aniz, Inc in the
future so stay tuned!

40 Days of Focus!

“If you focus on Results, you will never change. If you focus on Change, you will get Results.”(Jack Dixon)

We live in a fast-paced, “Results” driven society. As much as it rankles me to admit it, I am definitely a product of my environment. I love to  proudly display the results of hard work and tireless efforts, preferably outlined in glitter and framed in silver! However, although I agree that if you don’t succeed at your first attempt, you should always try, try, and try again, sometimes tunnel-vision focus on reaching a goal may ironically prohibit attainment of that goal due to flawed strategy. Subsequently we find ourselves on infinite repeat-frustrated, annoyed, exhausted, and close to the edge of giving up and accepting failure.

My platform ” Health Empowered: Throwing out the Bathroom Scale and Celebrating the Beauty of Health” is a reflection of my internal(ahem…and external!) struggle to reach a healthy weight and fitness level. My results-focused mentality drop-kicked me into a seemingly endless cycle of dieting, inconsistent exercise, and unhealthy behaviors that, at best made my weight fluctuate like a yo-yo on crack, and at worst found me in a deep dark crevice bingeing on cupcakes and twinkies like Hostess was going out of business! Now, don’t get the wrong idea here. In general, I’m a pretty healthy person and I know a thing or two about healthy eating and exercise. In fact, I could probably spout facts and statistics about weightloss and fitness better than Dr. Travis and the rest of America’s Medical Dream Team! However, none of that combined with my best effort was effectively helping me reach and maintain my personal goals. The result I so desperately prayed for wasn’t in sight, on the horizon, or even on the same planet! I was teetering on the edge of accepting my unhealthy weight as fact and buying stock in Little Debbie’s until a lightbulb flashed and I decided to change tactics.

It seems counter-intuitive to focus on process change to achieve end results instead of solely devoting your energies to  achieving the results themselves. Honestly, seeing 5lbs magically disappear on the scale would “make my day” much quicker than starting down the potentially winding path of  yet another healthy lifestyle plan. BUT, something as simple as a lifestyle change in my workout strategy could be key to toeing the line of success. Change is the key word here. If I really want to change my body(end result) I must redefine my focus and Change my process, because it isn’t currently working. This seemingly obvious revelation is perfectly timed to coincide with the Lenten season.

Traditionally, Lent is a 40-day season of reflection and repentance. It is an opportunity to give up something that poses a distraction or add something that will improve your relationship with God. I chose to go the extra mile and came up with 1 distraction  and 1 necessary addition for me this year. 40 days without the yummy treats I crave, to focus on developing healthier eating habits; and 40 days of exercise, to focus on increased physical fitness and consistency. Thus the birth of  40 days of Focus. This strategy is very different from previous, marginally successful plans simply because I have no intention of handing my checkcard over to Dr. Atkins or an LA fitness guru this time, in hopes that I will emerge from these 40 days encased in an exact replica of Halle Berry’s trim and toned physique(although I solemnly promise to not complain should such an event magically occur…) Instead, I am simply focusing on making the changes that will improve my current habits and provide constant motivation to live healthier!

What’s your Focus? Even if you don’t participate in Lent, there are 365 days, 52 weeks, and 12 months in the year! If there is something you want to change about yourself and you’ve tried, tried, and tried again with little success, take some time and re-Focus! Take a long, hard look at your goals and then re-evaluate your strategy. Change your focus. Change your strategy. Change yourself!

Focus, Grow, and Laugh Until Your Belly Aches!

Royally Yours,
Nykia

Happy New Year and ML King

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said ” At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love.” This was the underlying message of the Kingian Nonviolence in Action, Youth Expo and Health Festival held on Saturday, January 8, 2011 as a kick-off event to the upcoming King Holiday. Sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, this event highlighted youth serving as leaders of nonviolent action in their communities.

Kayla Dean-Miss Black Georgia Teen 2011 and I had the honor of representing the Miss/Ms. Black Georgia-USA pageant at the youth expo. We also had the pleasure of meeting and learning more about Georgia’s Outstanding Teen, Camille Sims, and look forward to partnering with her on future events and projects! In addition to inspirational presentations, poetry readings, and skits, we were treated to rousing musical performances from rising young stars Shameik Moore and Young Prayzer. The Creative Spark Foundation and ViZion “wowed” the crowd with their exciting hip hop and lyrical dance routines and  C.H.O.I.C.E.S for kids and Ferguson Karate pushed the crowd to their feet with “Chachersize” and karate demonstrations. Vendors from around the state came out en force to provide information on community programs for youth including Billion Pound Blitz, GLOSS inc, and Tri- Cities High School, the Grady Rape Crisis Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church Youth Group, Duke Foundation, and many others! Kayla and I were excited to spread the word on our respective platforms, sign autographs, take pictures, and network with representatives from each program.

A sobering highlight of the day, that truly brought home the message of teaching non-violence, was meeting a group of students acting to end violence and bullying in the name of their friend, Bobby Tillman, who was brutally beaten to death in a random act of violence while leaving a party in November 2010. Bobby’s mother established the Bobby Tillman Fund to help youth learn non-violent methods of dealing with anger and rage. His friends have taken on the mission of non-violence in action by asking their peers to sign the Bobby Tillman Pact for Non-Violence. I was honored and humbled to pledge that ” I will make a change in myself and help create a peaceful environment in my home, school, and community. It is my responsibility to be a part of the solution and not the problem.”

As we enter this new year and revive old resolutions to live healthier, stay in closer contact with friends and family, or revisit goals and dreams, I charge all of you to take the pledge and accept  responsibility for being a part of the solution!

As always, I encourage each of you to Learn, Love, and Laugh your way through life!
